Dona Nobis Pacem
for chorus and wind ensemble (2003)
This work won the Prix de la Commune de Welkenraedt at the composition competition organized by the Belgian APSAM Society (Association pour la Promotion des Sociétés d'Art Musical).
The purpose of the competition was to write a work for choir and woodwind orchestra on the theme of Peace. It is divided into two antagonistic parts of about equal length : the first depicting an imaginary war and wondering about the usefulness of it, while the second is a vision of peace in which a soloist and the choir repeats unceasingly the words Dona nobis pacem.
It was first performed on the 22nd November 2003 in Welkenraedt, Belgium by La Royale Harmonie Ste-Cécile de Montzen and three choral societies, Les Amis Réunis de Montzen, Les Deux Clochers de Beyne-Heusay and Société Royale de Chant l'Emulation de Verviers. This large ensemble of about 200 musicians and singers was conducted by José Schyns.
