Réflexions

for piano (2014)

This work is subtitled Trois petites pièces symétriques (Three little symetrical pieces). Each piece of this triptych is framed in a symetrical structure suggested by the symmetry of the lettres A-X-E : reflection of vertical axis (A), reflection of horizontal axis (E) and the combination of both (X), the word 'axe' meaning moreover and quite appropriately 'axis' in French.

The musical reslut is as follow : in the A-piece, the second half is (almost) identical to the retrogradation of the first half; in the 'E-piece', both hands play in mirror on each side of the central D of the keyboard, and the central 'X-piece' combines both writing techniques.

The central 'X-piece' was composed first for the purpose of a concert of short Belgian piano pieces (each about one minute long) and was premiered by Fabio Schinazi in Brussels on the 27th february 2015. The two other pieces were added a little later to provided a little more consistency to this very short work.

The duration is about 3'.
